Week Two
Attitudes and Images of Ageing
3 big ideas from the module:
1. How older people views are neglected.
2. I never really took a look at this but, how older people are viewed in the movies.
3. How the younger generation should pay attention to the attitudes of the older generation.
2 Examples:
1. One example I think of that I’m guilty of as well, is how we just blow off older people views and opinions. Sometimes it amazes me that we ask older people for their opinion but yet we blow it off like they are from another country. Because we may not identify with how they may say things I believe it is still valid and should be taken into account.
2. Another example is how older people are portrayed in the movies I never really thought about this I guess because we stereotype everything so much, but older people are portrayed negatively in movies like they are old, and not significant or important. They are made fun of a lot in movies. I think of Madea the older lady in Tyler Perry’s movies how she is made fun of and no one wants to listen to what she has to say. The character she has to show and do just to get a point across or for someone to listen to her.
Question:
What can we do to have the older population viewed in a more positive way?
The Learning Process:
The three things I learned this week were how older people views are neglected, how older people are portrayed in the movies, and how the younger generation should pay more attention to the older generation. I believe I could use these processes in my field to help advocate for the elderly population in ways of having them looked at in a more positive way in life. I can improve on my assessing by weighing in all information before assessing.
