Module Three Services for Older People with Mental Health Problems.
3 Big Ideals:
1. Long Term Mental Illness provided in the community rather than institutions.
2. The Care Pathway.
3. Admiral Nurses.
4. 2/3 of people with Dementia live in the Community.
2 Examples:
1. I take a look at our Mental Illness care now days and how they de-institutionalized everyone and are doing services in the community, but are so overwhelmed by caseloads and the participants are not getting the quality of managed care needed.
2. I was looking at the Care Pathway and it looks nice but couldn’t help but think of the hang-ups older people go through trying to receive the services they need. The hang-ups could be poor assessment, finances, Insurance coverage’s and limited resources, along with eligibility for services.
1 Question:
1.Shouldn’t carers be paid? ( Most are volunteers)
3 things I learned this week:
1. I learned that elder abuse is just one perspective of elder mistreatment it can come from a personal side, relational side, as well as a professional side.
2. I also learned that through Gender elder women may have more eco-socio opportunities than men as future moves on as women are the Kin Keepers of the family as gender roles are looking to change as time moves along.
3. I also learned about the filial responsibility and just learned of the word Filial in the child parent relationship pertaining to elder and younger. I wonder with the baby boomers population coming of age how this is going to pan out.
My self assessment this week was that I was trying to grasp as much of the materials as I could to stay on track and not fall behind. Maybe set aside a little more time for reading. I can put these things i learned in my social work tool box and use when working in the area of gerontology.
